The tattooing world has changed for the better for tattoo artists. They used to be restricted to prisons and less salubrious areas of the town. There are still tattoo artists who operate in such places, but plenty who prefer to show off their designs and abilities in an upscale salon.

Nowadays there is a greater acceptance of tattoing and appreciation for the wonders that can be created on the human skin. Prime time television has shows following the lives of prominent tattoo artists, and most major cities have at least one tattoo convention each year. There are now even schools to help train future tattoo artists.

A tattoo design can tell you a lot about a person's personality and character. Common tattoos found on people might represent anything from their sweetheart to their greatest passions, to their favorite soccer team or even to their children. Most tattoo enthusiasts enjoy talking about their tattoos and explaining the meaning of each one.

In the past, the best an aspiring artist could hope for was to be trained by another artist in the business. The designs were usually simple and done by hand or using homemade machines. The sanitary conditions were abysmal. Antibacterial precautions were not known about so plenty of people suffered from ink poisoning due to badly prepared dyes and inks.

Fortunately the modern tattoo artist has reached a new respectability. There are specialty magazines and gatherings where the artwork of tattoos can be found. The common tattoo "joint" where everything is done as quickly as possible with very little thought as to quality or sophistication is now competing with tattoo parlors that resemble upscale beauty salons.

People who choose to use these upscale tattoo parlors usually want something more exotic than just a plain butterfly tattoo. They want someone with great artistic skills to tattoo their skin. Nowadays, people often demand tattoos of pretty much anything, including the most intricate pictures and drawings of people and animals.

Some people want to get tattoos and others prefer to get a piercing. Some want both, which is why many tattoo artists are also certified to pierce various parts of the body. Piercing often is not permanent, unless it is an extreme type of piercing. Tattooing, on the other hand, is for life.

The world has changed dramatically during the last generation. Values and norms have broadened and the tattoo artist is no longer regarded with suspicion and hostility. Those who tattoo others have gained acceptance as their works of art have come to light. As more people elect to have a tattoo, our society will continue to accept this art form even more in the future.
