Home Schooling From Both Sides Of The Fence

Home schooling is not a fad that has just become popular these days; it has been used in some form of the other for centuries. However, the rise in home schooling in modern day America can be attributed to the dissatisfaction with how our tax dollars are being spent in public school systems.

Homeschooling is no longer a 'hippie' or strange thing as more and more families in the US are opting to educate their children themselves where they have better control of what they are learning.

With large class sizes and strain on resources, the public school system is fine for average kids; however those that are gifted and those with learning disabilities are not catered to appropriately. Gifted children are not given as challenging a curriculum as they deserve and hence they slack and take school life easy. Children with a disability or different ability also do not get the attention they warrant at many school districts.

Unschooling - In addition to the traditional forms of homeschooling, unschooling is another relatively new concept that is getting many takers today. It is home schooling but minus the syllabus; children take the lead in this form of education and parents feed their curiosity.

If your kids ask questions about why there is such a fuss about the upcoming presidential election, parents will take the opportunity to take them to the library, read a little about past presidents, introduce them to the constitution and then have some hands on activities like trying to come up with a campaign or a fundraising idea on their own.

Many parents like giving homeschooling a try in the summer when the days are longer, the children more relaxed and a lot to do outdoors as hands on activities. It also gives them a real experience of what materials and resources they would need to run a school at home. In addition to the books and materials, you also need to find options for child care for younger siblings during homeschooling instruction hours as well as extra help perhaps with household chores like cooking and laundry which you used to tackle while the kids were at school.

You will need to manage time in a way that you are at par with the outline you have designed or one that you are following from a book so that your child is not lagging in any subject area.

Both sides have their points and there is no correct answer. You need to see what works for your family. Perhaps give it a trial run in the summer and then see if home schooling works for you and your children; good luck.
