Google and their PageRank
April 19th, 2008 | by Walter |a.) Here is an excerpt from the Google Technology page:
“PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value.”
b.) Here is a definition taken from Dictionary.com:
DEMOCRACY: the principles of social equality and respect for the individual within a community
Now at this point in the game, I don’t really place much weight on Google’s PageRank. This has a lot to do with it NOT being democratic, in fact being completely arbitrary with it’s value able to be pulled at any point by the DICTATOR in charge.
I think we need to have Google’s definition of the PageRank revised a bit to clarify the true nature of the system; “PageRank relies on whatever we feel it needs to at the moment. Enjoy yours while it lasts.”
I lost my first PageRank value several updates ago. At that point in time I had a pretty decent value for it. I did not pay for links to my site from ANY other sites. Other than the site being ugly due to not having very good designing skills at that time, there was nothing awry. Long story short, my business and traffic increased right after losing the PageRank. I continue to do business with that website and quite a bit of it actually. So much for that “indicator of an individuals page’s value” theory.
I lost my second PageRank value early yesterday morning. I must have angered the “democracy” in some way. My reaction to this was sort of a chuckle, I suppose. I am now awaiting the traffic and business increase as I must be doing something right to be noticed in this special way. I wonder if we can vote, since this is a democratic system, for the PageRank scale to be 20 points instead of 10, then I would request a -5, I could quit my job.
Work on your SEO, work on your content, design, value. Target your customers needs and the rest will follow. You don’t need a little green bar to tell you or your customers how important a site will be to them or how important it is to you. Pay for links if you want to, it’s your choice. If you want a link from a particular site and the only way the webmaster will agree is to pay, pay. It’s YOUR Internet and YOUR website, not Google’s - they need not tell you how to or influence how you run YOUR business.

UPDATE: Read above about “awaiting the traffic…” - after losing pagerank, traffic increased from 2000 a month to around 4200 a month.
See!?
