ATM Skimmer

Skimmer At ATM Hits St. Clair Shores

Approximately 12 recent users of an ATM machine in St. Clair Shores found their bank accounts much lighter than expected and police are now investigating how their accounts came to be compromised via a skimmer.

The transactions in question took place between June 15th and July 21st at the ATM at Credit Union One on the 28200 block of Harper, according to a statement from the St. Clair Shores Police Department.

Users would insert cards into the machine and make deposits or withdrawals. Police believe a skimmer device had been placed on the machines, which allowed the people who placed it there to access victims’ banking information.

This information would then be put onto fake ATM cards, and the money withdrawn from other ATMs. Victims report being scammed of anywhere from $300 to $1,000.

The investigation is in its early stages, and St. Clair Shores police are asking for anyone with information on the scam to call its Detective Bureau at 586-445-5305.
