Body In Burned Home Is Son Of Warren Official

A body found in a vacant, burned-out house in the city has been identified as the son of a well-known Metro Detroit police commissioner.

The body discovered Wednesday at a house on the 16100 block of Bramell has been identified through fingerprinting as Michael Dwyer, 55, by the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office. County officials said the cause and manner of his death are still pending. They are not releasing any further details at this time.

Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer also confirmed the death of his son.

“Sadly, it’s true,” he told WWJ-AM (950).

Dwyer was last seen by his dad a few days before he disappeared in late October, according to Warren Mayor Jim Fouts. The house burned down Oct. 26, but Dwyer’s body wasn’t found until Wednesday.

When the police chief last saw his son, he seemed to be doing fine, Fouts said.

“It’s a tough thing,” the mayor said. “Time will tell what happened.”

Bill Dwyer’s office released the following statement Friday:

“Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer is requesting that the media respect the privacy of his family during this difficult period. The tragic death of Michael Dwyer is being thoroughly investigated by the Detroit Police Department and neither the Dwyer family nor Warren Police Department will be releasing any information at this time. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in allowing his family time to grieve.”

On Friday, Detroit Fire Commissioner Eric Jones said the house was too dangerous to search immediately after the fire was extinguished. He called it a “firefighter safety issue.”

Local police officials also expressed their condolences Friday.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family of retired (Franklin-Bingham Farms Police) Officer David Dwyer whose brother recently passed away unexpectedly,” the department said on its Facebook page. “Our sympathy goes out to David and his entire family.”
